The agenda was pretty light this month, but it was notably the last meeting for Dan Cash, Josh Brown, Jay Galbreath, Eric Welch, and Drason Beasley.
Public comment
There were six folks who signed up for public comment. Two football coaches advocated for an athletic period during the school day. One high school father spoke out against the district's use of an electronic hall pass system called Securly, arguing it collects proxy biometric data and is a lawsuit waiting to happen. One speaker was concerned about the board engaging a new law firm. Another speaker urged the board to take their time in selecting social studies textbooks. And finally Beverly Purvis thanked the board, admin, and teachers for an excellent start to the school year.
New TN laws
The Consent Agenda was quite lengthy due to many policy changes that were required to comply with new state laws. Some examples are as follows:
- Employees must have their information verified using E-Verify
- Instruction on child trafficking prevention and awareness will be included in the Family Life Education program
- Public comment during specially called meeting does not have to pertain to the agenda
Board Members rolling off
Each of the five board members attending their last meeting was presented with a plaque from Leigh Webb. They each took a turn to give their thanks to the community for the opportunity to serve.
Mr. Cash said that it was the "greatest job I've ever had."
Mr. Galbreath expressed the importance of being able to disagree and still collaborate.
Mr. Beasley said that it has been a highlight of his life. "Thank you for letting me serve."
Mr. Welch recounted his experience over the last 16 years, and concluded his time on the board by extolling Dr. Webb's virtues, saying that she is the best person to be our new superintendent.
Mr. Brown talked about how he came to a WCS board meeting while he was in high school here. To think that he would be on the board 30 years later is wild. "It's been a privilege to serve."
Other notable topics
The early release day for elementary schools that was scheduled for November 11 has been moved to November 18.
The board voted to engage Sam Jackson of the Spencer Fane Law Firm, effective September 1st, 2026 to replace outgoing in-house attorney, Bobby Cook.
Next meeting
The next meeting will be Monday, September 21, 2026 at 6:30 pm.
